The SC Forestry Commission Urban and Community Forestry Team and Green Infrastructure Center (GIC) got together in December for site visits to Trees4SC project planting sites in Darlington and Lake City. GIC is the subrecipient of a grant from the USDA Forest Service through the SCFC to carry out this project.
The purpose of the Trees4SC grant project is to build capacity for urban forestry management in the community and to carry out and lead tree planting projects for 12 SC municipalities. Darlington and Lake City were some of the first cities to begin the Trees4SC project.
As part of the project, communities hold workshops where input is requested to help make plans for the Trees4SC project in each municipality. Codes are examined, and land cover and potential planting areas are mapped. Based on this planning process, tree planting areas are located and then planted.
