Forest Health staff recently published its 2025 Southern Pine Beetle pheromone trapping results, the annual study of SPB populations around the state and predictive report for SPB activity in the upcoming season.
The agency has conducted annual spring pheromone trapping since 1986, this year deploying traps in 32 counties. Based on the data from these traps, we predict increasing or high SPB activity in Abbeville, Anderson, Edgefield, McCormick and Saluda counties and static or moderate SPB activity in Greenwood, Oconee and Pickens counties.
The remainder of the state is predicted to have little significant SPB activity. SPB was reported in 66% of the counties trapped, and clerid predators have decreased from the previous year. The National Weather Service predicts warmer weather and increased rainfall in the region over the season.
Forest Health Director David Jenkins and SPB Coordinator Tyler Greiner advise monitoring stands for SPB in Abbeville, Anderson, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick, Oconee, Pickens and Saluda, where they will continue to conduct aerial surveys in these and other counties.
