Edgefield/McCormick/Saluda Sector Wildland Firefighters Derek Adams, William Yonce and Brandon McReynolds, along with FMO Colton Webb, dedicated part of their Saturday to sharing fire prevention and safety tips with kids from Edgefield, Saluda and Aiken counties.
The group took part in the 4th Annual Back to School Bookbag Giveaway at Ridge Spring-Monetta Middle-High School July 12. William and Brandon did a great job dressed as Smokey, and the group also handed out some fire prevention goodies.
This event was organized by a local nonprofit, Hand-N-Hand Community and Wellness Center, and it sounds like Smokey and his friends were a big hit!

“SMOKEY was a huge success with the children by taking pictures, playing basketball (needs a little work, but he did good…LoL!), and walking around greeting people. Sometimes small children fear big furry animals, but not SMOKEY, they wanted to touch and hug him which was amazing.
Thank you for allowing SMOKEY and his team to be part of an amazing event for the children. We look forward to partnering in the future with the South Carolina Forestry Commission.
