Niederhof Forestry Center hosted the annual NWTF/SCFC Military Appreciation Turkey Hunt April 10-11. Three South Carolina National Guardsmen hunted on the 1600 acres at Niederhof and each harvested a gobbler. State Forester Scott Phillips, Coastal Regional Forester Pete Stuckey and Edisto Unit Forester Kip Terry were the guides for the hunt and called for the hunters.
After introductions, orientation and hunt guidelines Thursday afternoon, the hunters patterned their guns on the range. A safety briefing was given, guides were drawn and the hunters and their guides left for the afternoon hunt.
Thursday afternoon Dustin Gunter harvested an 18.3 lb. gobbler with guide Pete Stuckey. Friday morning Luke Gunter harvested a 19.8 lb. gobbler with guide Kip Terry and Richard Taylor harvested his first turkey with Scott Phillips.
Everyone enjoyed the fun, fellowship, food and time outdoors. The National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) provided the food for the hunt.
