Class 1 electric bicycles, also known as e-bikes, are now allowed on all South Carolina state forests everywhere that analog bicycles are permitted.
In general, a Class 1 e-bike is a pedal-assisted bicycle whose electric motor only provides power when the rider is pedaling – it has no throttle – and stops assisting at 20 mph or when brakes are applied.
Whether two- or three-wheeled, they also must have fully operable pedals and an electric motor of no more than 750 watts, or one horsepower.
Class 2 and class 3 electric bicycles are not allowed on South Carolina state forests.
E-bike users are encouraged, as are all forest visitors, to recreate responsibly by sticking to established trails and sharing them with other user groups, including mountain bikers, hikers and equestrian riders.
