Urban Program Wins Community Engagement Activity of the Year
The Forestry Commission’s Urban and Community Forestry Program received the Community Engagement Activity of the Year from USC Upstate April 3. The Commission is a proud partner with USC Upstate on their Food Forest Project.
South Carolina Food Forest Grants support planning, planting, and managing public land for food forests to improve food access and affordability in areas that have historically struggled with food insecurity, limited greenspace, or access to fresh, affordable produce. Food forests, also called forest gardens or edible forests, are a way for communities to manage forest ecosystems for human food production. This grant is funded by the USDA Forest Service.
FIA Employees Receive National Awards
Kudos to the Forestry Commission’s Forest Inventory Coordinator Byron Rominger and Pee Dee FIA Forester Logan Bell on recently being awarded the U.S. Forest Service FIA Director’s Award for Forest Inventory and Analysis excellence for federal fiscal year 2024.
Rominger and Bell were two of only three national recipients, all from the South, of the Davita Colker Bryant Award for excellence in any aspect of field data collection.
Logan was recognized for the highest quality field data collection, earning a 98.2% accuracy average, and Byron was honored for numerous technical accomplishments as well as regional FIA leadership, hard work and mentorship prime among them.
