Growing Our Future Annual Forestry Meeting

Three Forestry Commission employees spoke at Clemson Extension’s annual Growing Our Future meeting on May 7 at the SC State Farmers Market in West Columbia.

Career Day in Chesterfield County

Chesterfield/Lancaster Sector FMO Molly Hopkins, Wildland Firefighters Luke Owen and Dylan Rivers and Chesterfield/Darlington Project Forester Jon Alexander represented the SCFC at the Chesterfield-Ruby Middle School career day on April 24.

The group shared about different career paths that the 6th to 8th graders can someday explore with the Forestry Commission and explained how education sets students up for success.

SCFC Hosts First Squirrel Hunt

The Forestry Commission hosted its first-ever squirrel hunt on January 18 at the Niederhof Forestry Center. The Southern Sportsmans Alliance contacted the Commission about hosting the annual Madilyn Willingham Youth Squirrel Hunt after the original location was damaged by Hurricane Helene. Seventy-six people attended the rainy event.

After participants divided into groups, adults carried guns for the children and dogs helped find squirrels. When squirrels were found, the adults carefully handed a gun to each hunter and helped them get set up to shoot. Participants harvested 34 squirrels off the property.

Coastal Carolina University Achievement

Coastal Carolina University achieved its second year as a Tree Campus Higher Education from the Arbor Day Foundation. Dr. Dominique Werboff, Founding Director of the CCU Arboretum, successfully applied for this recognition in 2023 and 2024. Coastal Carolina University is the only university in the Pee Dee region that has Tree Campus Higher Education status.
